Bryan ISD Earns 21 Campus Distinctions in 2013 Accountability Ratings

The 2013 Texas Education Agency (TEA) Accountability ratings, released today, paint a broad picture of academic success throughout Bryan ISD’s 24 campuses. Every school in the district met the state’s standards for academic achievement, marking the results of increased efforts to focus intently on classroom instruction and curriculum.

TEA recognized top performances in reading, math and student progress, earning Bryan ISD 21 distinctions overall.

Distinctions are based on multiple measures by which a school must perform at the utmost level as compared to 40 “peer” or similar campuses around the state.

“These results are an encouraging foundation we will build upon in the year ahead,” said Dr. Tommy Wallis, Bryan ISD superintendent. “We have invested in instructional coaches for every campus, hired an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and have implemented an aggressive plan called The Bryan Model that focuses on the advancement of every child.”

Overall, Bryan ISD met the state’s standards for student achievement (academics), student progress (how well students advance) and closing the performance gaps (measuring how well economically disadvantaged students do compared to other groups).

The district met three of the four state standards but fell just one percentage point shy on the metric of post-secondary readiness. Results from Bryan and Rudder High Schools mirrored those of the district overall—meeting three of the four standards and coming within a few percentage points of the goal for post-secondary readiness.

Though only in its second year, the state’s new accountability system attempts to give a snapshot of the year’s academic performance overall, while offering specific demographic and campus data each school can use to improve. Two elementary schools (Crockett, Jones) fell slightly short of standards on student progress or closing the performance gaps, but the renewed focus on instructional coaching and preparation of students passing from elementary school to secondary school aims to bring all schools into the top accountability ranking.

“Our focus has never been clearer—that means providing positive educational opportunities that ensure high school graduation and post-secondary success,” Wallis said. “There is much yet to do, but these accountability results affirm the work we are implementing and the values by which we do our jobs. At Bryan ISD, that means accepting every child unconditionally, supporting them and celebrating them. It means putting children first, and results like those released today are beginning to show the difference that truly makes.”
